These factsheets provide additional information for members of the NHS Superannuation Scheme Scotland pre and post April 2008 Section (of the Scheme). The contents should be read in conjunction with the member's guide for the Scheme.

  Link   Additional Pension Benefits
You can increase the amount of benefits you get at retirement by paying extra contributions. These are called Additional Voluntary Contributions or AVCs. There are four ways of doing this and each way buys you different benefits.

  Link   Costs and Contributions
The cost of providing the benefits payable from the Scheme depends on the amount of the benefits and how long they are payable for. This depends on factors such as salary increases and how long people live.
The contributions to the Scheme are estimated by the Scheme actuary who performs periodic valuations of the Scheme to determine how much needs to be paid to provide the benefits. These costs are shared between the NHS employers and the Scheme members.

  Link   Injury Benefits
The NHS Injury Benefit Scheme is a compensation scheme for employees in the National Health Service (Scotland) who sustain an injury or disease attributable to their NHS duties. However, you are only eligible to apply for NHS Injury benefits if you are injured or contract a disease on or before 30 March 2013.

Active members who do not have Full or Tapered Protection in their current pension scheme will be moved over to the new 2015 scheme on 1 April 2015. If you have HMRC Enhanced Protection, FP2012 and F 2014 it will be lost.

As a member of the scheme, there are things you may have to consider before completing your
application for retirement benefits.
  Link   Returning to Work after retiring with Upper Tier Ill health benefits
If you are in receipt of an upper tier ill health pension and return to employment you should note that you will be restricted as to the type of work that you are able to undertake, whether or not you return to employment in the NHS. The level of earnings that you have may affect your pension.

  Link   Transferring in
A pension transfer involves the payment to SPPA of a sum of money (a transfer value) from another pension scheme to increase your benefits in SPPA. This money represents what you have built up through your membership of that scheme. It is the amount the scheme will pay to SPPA if you decide to give up your entitlement to benefits from that scheme.

If you return to NHS employment following retirement the effect of this is different depending on which section of the NHS pension scheme you were in and also on the date when you ceased employment.
