Opting out of the Firefighters’ Pension Scheme (FPS)

The FPS was closed to new members from and including 6th April 2006. If you do not want to be a member of the FPS you can opt out at any time by giving written notice to your fire and rescue authority although it is now no longer possible to opt back into it.

The emergency Budget announced that from April 2011 the indexation of benefits, tax credits and the State Second Pension will be based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) instead of the Retail Price Index (RPI).  This change will also apply to public service pensions through the statutory link to the indexation of the additional pensions in long-term benefits (including the State Second Pension).
