What happens if I go on leave?
While on maternity leave, you will remain a member of the scheme. Your contributions are based on the pensionable pay you actually receive during the period of paid maternity leave, whether this is full pay or Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP). If you take unpaid maternity leave, your contributions are based on the pensionable pay you were receiving immediately before the period of unpaid maternity leave (normally SMP). If you are unable to afford your contributions whilst on unpaid maternity leave, then you must make arrangements with your employer to pay arrears when you return to work. Arrears should be paid in full within a reasonable timescale.
Paternity Leave, Paternal Leave, Adoption Leave
Where the leave is paid, contributions are based on your normal salary. If the leave is unpaid, the contributions are based on the rate of pensionable pay immediately prior to the leave starting.
If you go on sick leave, your contributions are based on the pensionable pay you receive. If your pensionable pay is reduced, contributions will be paid on the reduced amount. If you have no entitlement to Statutory Sick Pay and receive no income, then no contributions are payable. Although you will not accrue any service for pension purposes if you are not contributing, you would remain covered for any Death in Service benefits offered by the scheme.
